About the Quest
I've liked books for as long as I can remember, but I haven't done of a whole lot of non-academic reading in recent years. So, originally I just had a general resolution: read more!Which is easy enough, but I didn't want to just re-read old favorites. Re-reading favorites was about the only non-academic reading I did when I was in college. I needed to branch out... but where the heck was I supposed to start? By pulling random books off a library shelf?
As interesting as random reads might be, I decided I'd start from a top 100 list. I don't really know how it happened, but somehow "a top 100 list" turned into "five top 100 lists." Thus, the quest was born.
While I'll still go back and re-read some books now and then (and will track them accordingly, if they're on the big fat scary list), the fact that I've got a ton of other things to read should keep me from settling into my comfort zone for too long.
I started reading from the lists in late December 2005, though the site wasn't created until a couple of weeks after the quest began. I have no idea how long it's going to take me to complete it. But as long as I finish eventually, that's all that matters. And, hey, if I find some new favorite authors/books thanks to this project of mine... well, that's even better!
